Emma (Schmidt) Cloutier

Emma (Schmidt) Cloutier

The information we have on Emma Schmidt, daughter of Louis and Caroline Schmidt is very sketchy. We have not yet been able to verify any of the information we have on file.

Here is what we have.
Emma was born 4 August 1881 in Bavaria. She moved to Minneapolis circa 1904 and lived there until her death on 13 February 1934. She married Edward Joseph Cloutier , son of Hector and Alvina (Jarvis) Clothier sometime before 1930 when they appear on the census living in Minneapolis, Hennepin, Minnesota.

Edward, known as Clukie, was born 23 July 1887. On his WWI Draft registration he was married and living at 315 Minnehaha Avenue Minneapolis and worked as a machinist at Minneapolis Steel Machine Company. In 1930 he worked for the post office. We do not believe the couple had any children. They were Catholic and he was a member of the Holy Rosary Parish.

Edward served as a private in the US Army. He died July 22, 1939 and is buried in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Section A-2 Site 335 in Minneapolis. I have never been to the Fort Snelling National cemetery but visiting any veteran cemetery is breathtaking. Fort Snelling is 436.3 acres in size and has over 175,000 burials. The headstones are positioned in such a way that no matter which direction you look, you see relatively straight rows. It is as if the soldiers are still in formation even though they have gone on to another life. Very impressive.

Emma is buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Minneapolis. St. Mary’s Cemetery was established in 1873 by the Church of the Immaculate Conception (Basilica). Control of it was given to the Diocese in 1887. It is about 65 acres in size and is located in the center of South Minneapolis 4403 Chicago Avenue. There are over 64,000 burials at this cemetery.

When we get photos of their headstones we will add the photos to the gallery.
