John Sanderson

About John Sanderson

John Sanderson was born in Northern Ireland in 1791. He married Margaret Whitfield, October 6th 1812 in Ireland. Not much is known about Margaret. She is said to have been born in England abt. 1795.

About 1821 the family emigrated to America. They settled first in Hudson, NY. They remained here a number of years then moved to Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Then later moved to Athens, Greene County, NY.

John and Margaret (Whitfield) Sanderson had 7 children:

The children all lived to mature manhood and womanhood, and in social standing, as well as in the accumulation of wealth, have enjoyed an enviable position among their fellow citizens. [1]

John and Margaret were members of the Baptist Church in Athens, and were numbered among its most liberal supporters.

John operated a glue factory until bad health forced him to retire. As a business man, he was noted for punctuality in meeting his obligations and for honesty and fair dealing in all his transactions. In 1850 his real estate was valued at $9000.[1]

John Sanderson died 28 Sept 1854 in the village of Athens at the age of 63. Margaret, survived him by 22 years. She died at the home of her daughter Eliza, in Milwaukee, 17 November 1876. She was 81 years old.

Her remains were brought to Athens, where she was buried beside, John Sanderson in the Rural Cemetery of Athens.
