Golden Gloves Boxing

Golden Gloves Boxing

The history of boxing goes back to the Ancient Greeks, when toughing up young men meant to have them box with bare fists. During World War I, boxing was part of the required training for Army recruits.

In 1923 Chicago Tribune Sports Editor Arch Ward had on idea of a city-wide amateur boxing tournament sponsored by the newspaper. The tournament got its name because each champion was awarded a miniature golden glove. The Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions as we know it now started March 24, 1928. More about the history of Golden Gloves.

Billy Pierce and Jimmy Pierce were very active in the boxing circuit.
